Issues raised by media ownership

During the process of production, distribution, and marketing, there are many issues raised by film media ownership and funding.


One of the most noticeable concerns of film producers is their audience’s interpretation. There are many ways a viewer can look at a film, that may or may not match the producers’ intended message. For example, a producer may portray a specific political view in a comical way, intending for it to make their audience laugh. Depending on a viewer’s political view, they may or may not find his remark comical. If a film is interpreted the wrong way, due to the vast use of social media, films are likely to lose funding and receive negative comments.


Additionally, films may contain various stereotypes. Stereotypes can express almost everything. Cleaning ads, such that of Febreze, are normally influenced by the stereotype of women as house maids, which viewers could take offence to. Other stereotypes help the audience interpret the film. For example, in many teenage movies, such as Mean Girls, the “mean” girls normally have straight blonde hair and stick out from the rest of the cast. However, some films use stereotypes that do not match the theme of the film, this can be incidental or on purpose. An example of this would be Legally Blonde; the main character is perceived as a dumb blonde who is unemployed, yet she becomes a successful lawyer.


Lastly, the film industry is run by only a few major companies. Disney is the best example of this. Disney owns many other companies such as ESPN and Marvel. Although these companies produce very different film content, they both have the same supervision. In other words, Disney’s own views are reflected into every product. This, as a result, creates a less diverse film industry. Another example is TimeWarner. TimeWarner owns the majority of CNN productions. This means that through all their applications, each one shares the same viewpoints; it would simply not make sense for TimeWarner to express two different ideas.


In conclusion, there are many issues that come into play by film media ownership and funding. The film industry is indiverse and the result of these films are likely to share the same viewpoints on certain things. Yet, these films are interpreted many different ways by the viewers whom watch them.
