notes:
Camera Shots:
• car movement (probably shot by a hand held camera in car)a few closeups, medium shot of driver exiting car. • medium shot behind object, movement towards face • movement towards face again, medium shots of talkers (camera switches to whoever is talking) • aerial shot of property, handheld camera follows actor as he picks something up, medium shot • combination of medium and close up shots in kitchen • over the shoulder shot of kids watching the ducks "fly"
Sound:
• intro music, sound bridge fades intro music into ambient sound (clock, birds chirping) • no music, realistic noises(footsteps, door closing), dialogue • incidental music over narrating voice, ambient sound mixed in (birds chirping), incidental music cuts, radio music, dialogue between family, sound perspective of actor yelling for kids to watch ducks.
Editing:
• text of intro • transition from statue to man back and forth • voices are very clear, can hear every movement (mic'd up?) • very clear eye view, most likely edited to look like this. • ducks in pool may be trained or edited
Mise-en-scene:
• driving past small houses, small town? bigger house • modern interior, looks as if its a therapists office, books, bright lighting, her clothing matches the stereotype of a therapist • modern clothing of actors and actresses • New York accents, must be somewhere in NY • expensive-looking house, big yard, pool, somewhat modern inside
Meaning:
This clip had many elements that established it's scenes. Sound and camera shots established emotion and the point of view of the actors, specifically, using sound perspective and incidental. The clip’s mise-en-scene shows the setting of each scene and that it takes place in modern time. Finally, editing pulls the whole clip together by using transitions and tools to make it’s sound clear.
The clip from Sopranos begins with its intro, in which contains the theme music. After the intro ends, a sound bridge is used to fade out the theme music and introduce ambient sound of the setting. This ambient sound is quiet, containing only the sound of birds chirping, approaching footsteps, doors opening and closing, and a wall clock ticking. These sounds are clear and obvious to the audience. Occasional dialogue is added over this ambient sound until incidental music takes over the ambient sound and a narrative voice replaces the dialogue. The incidental music sets the mood of the subject matter and is mixed with subtle ambient sound to enhance the sense of realness. In the second half of the clip, the incidental music is replaced by the sound of a radio playing in the kitchen and environmental sounds increase as actors move away from the radio. Finally, sound perspective is used multiple times when actors are communicating through different parts of the house, which creates a dialogue that does not sound narrative.
