Writeup:
There are many camera angles and shots that help viewers to understand the overall message of the clip. The clip is introduced with a long/aerial shot which shows the setting of the clip. Scene 1 consists of a closeup to show a happy emotion from the actor in the scene. Scene 2 follows with a three-shot and closeup of the actress in which shows an annoyed emotion. In both scenes, a closeup shot was used to show emotion, which allows viewers to see feelings without any actual dialogue telling their specific emotions. Further, handheld cameras were used in scene 2 to follow movement of the family in the house. This allowed every character in the scene to be shown, avoiding long shots and enforcing closeup and medium shots. The clip consists of many over the shoulder shots to help develop feeling and certainty. Scene 3 consists an over the shoulder shot of a girl exiting a car in which was used to show point of view, while also allowing the viewer to see the reactions and facial expressions of other characters in full body and medium shots. All in all, most shots taken were medium shots, shot from the waist up, to avoid a distracting background.
The clip opens with nondiegetic sound: incidental music, in which is heard in between most scenes. This music is upbeat, however fits the setting. As this incidental music fades between scenes, ambient sound creates a more real setting and environment. Using specific examples, scene 1 incudes the sound of wind blowing and a car engine running, and also including the clinic sounds from the other end of phone. Scene 2 also uses diegetic sound of the actress cutting Kiwi and the sound of birds chirping outside. Further, Scene 5 incorporates nondiegetic sound of troublesome music to show a tense emotion without the use of dialogue. All scenes contain a large amount of dialogue that show the interaction and relationships between the characters.
The Mise-en-scene of the clip is very simplistic. It seems to be more central as it is hilly but also appears to have a tropical climate, as shown by the long shot of the introduction. The main setting is a ranch; the clip shows horse stables (with horses in them), fields of grass, and a simple home. Specifically in scene 4, stables are shown in the background of the medium two shot. Scene 2 shows the family’s home. This home has many neutral colors, nothing dull, yet nothing extravagant. The lighting is not great, which further expresses the fact that they live in a ranch home. The clothes worn have a modern style, showing that the clip must take place in a recent year, while also having a southern, ranch-type look to them.
The opening scene consists of a man driving a car. Although possibly a real moving car, the editors may have used a green screen effect to make it look as though a stationary car was moving. Further, in almost every medium shot, the background is blurred. This is to avoid disruption of the background and focus more on the main object (in this case people). Specifically, this is shown in Scene 4. The two shot focusses on the people, leaving and open door to the stables, with one horse in view, blurred.
